Uncertainty surrounds snowfall predictions as Finland braces for winter weather
Earlier weather forecasts indicated that southern and central regions of Finland could expect snowfall, but there is now uncertainty regarding the precipitation’s form. Fintraffic warned yesterday that snowfall could reach between 5 to 10 centimeters.
Iiris Idoko, a meteorologist from the Finnish Meteorological Institute, explained that a low-pressure system approaching from the west would bring rain, sleet, or snow, particularly to southern and western parts of the country. According to updated models, precipitation will begin as rain and may transition to snow during the early morning hours.
The rain system is expected to reach central Finland around 8 PM tonight, with possible precipitation amounts of 10 to 15 mm in the form of rain, sleet, or snow throughout the night. Commuters tomorrow morning should plan for additional travel time, as temperatures are expected to drop overnight, potentially leading to icy road conditions.
Idoko advised that those traveling on Friday morning should prepare for possible snowfall or sleet. She strongly recommended against using summer tires for travel during this period. Another wave of precipitation is forecast to arrive in Finland on Friday.
