Iceland achieves highest household high-speed internet connectivity in Nordic region

According to a recent report on telecommunications usage in the Nordic countries and the Baltic States, 99% of households in Iceland are connected to high-speed internet, defined as having speeds of 30 megabits per second or more. This report, compiled by the Icelandic Communications Authority and its counterparts in other countries, highlights the unique position of Iceland, Norway, and Sweden in terms of high-speed connectivity compared to other nations.

The report notes that while fixed-line phone usage in Iceland remains the highest among the surveyed countries, at approximately 21% of the population, it is quickly declining. In other nations, the fixed-line usage averages around 8%. The research also pointed out significant growth in mobile network usage, particularly 4G and 5G, during 2020 and 2021, likely driven by the COVID-19 pandemic which pushed many to work remotely. Although mobile data usage decreased somewhat in 2022 and 2023 compared to the peak pandemic years, overall trends have shown a substantial increase in data consumption.

Iceland ranks third in mobile data usage among the countries surveyed, following Finland and Denmark, with an average consumption of 34.1 gigabits per month per capita. Finland leads with 71.7 gigabits per capita. The Icelandic Communications Authority aims to ensure that high-speed mobile service reaches all households and workplaces by 2032.
