Difficult conditions were reported at the World Scout Jamboree held in South Korea in July 2023, where over 100 Icelandic scouts attended. Participants faced inadequate sanitation, pest problems, limited food, and a flooded campsite, leading to significant additional costs for the Icelandic group.

Harpa Ósk Valgeirsdóttir, the scout leader, criticized the South Korean authorities for failing to prepare sufficient infrastructure for the event, marking a significant deviation from previous gatherings. Despite the adverse conditions, she noted that most children still had a remarkable experience.

The high costs of the event—nearly 700,000 krónur per child—sparked disputes regarding financial management within the Icelandic scouting movement. Parents expressed dissatisfaction over the funding allocation, leading to a vote of no confidence aimed at the Icelandic Scouts Association’s annual accounts.

After returning home, parents received a summary of the financial dealings, and while many were satisfied with the explanations, others remained dissatisfied and sought further details. The costs incurred, which totaled a loss of five million krónur, were attributed to emergency food purchases, hotel accommodations, and additional transportation expenses due to a typhoon threatening the event.

Following the jamboree, South Korea’s scout organization issued an apology. Adjustments to international scouting practices have been introduced, with the next jamboree scheduled in Poland for 2027, aiming to ensure better preparations for future events.
