A 68-year-old man has been fined for endangering public safety by the Satakunta District Court in Finland following a serious residential fire in Huittinen. The fire, which occurred in September two years ago, caused significant destruction to the man’s apartment, as well as damage to other units in the residential block due to the flames spreading through the ceiling.
The block comprises 14 apartments, nine of which were in use as assisted living accommodations for elderly residents at the time of the incident. Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries associated with the fire.
According to the charges, the man had been smoking on his couch, and the fire was determined to have resulted from his negligent handling of the cigarette. The man denied the allegations. However, the court concluded that investigations carried out by the fire department and police provided sufficient evidence that the fire originated from the couch, attributed to the man’s careless smoking practices.
Additionally, the court ruled that the man worsened the situation by leaving his apartment door open upon his exit.
The court imposed a fine of €800, calculated based on 80 daily fines, reflecting the man’s income. Furthermore, he is required to compensate neighbors for damages amounting to several hundred euros. He was not charged with arson but for endangering public safety due to his negligence. The ruling is not yet final, as it is subject to appeal to a higher court.
