Businesses seek 805,385 kroner from man charged with 46 thefts
Businesses are seeking 805,385 Icelandic krónur in compensation from a man charged with 46 theft offences, mbl.is reports. The alleged stolen goods include chicken, beef, cosmetics, tools, Easter eggs and aluminium foil.
Not all of the stores involved have filed compensation claims, while the estimated total value of the alleged stolen goods is considerably higher. The charges cover 45 thefts and one attempted theft between December 2024 and March this year.
Meat alleged to have been stolen in 23 cases
Food appears regularly in the indictment, with meat allegedly involved in 23 of the 46 counts.
The man is accused of stealing chicken breasts worth nearly 59,000 krónur from a Bónus store in Spöngin and chicken breasts worth more than 34,000 krónur from a Krónan store at Grandi.
In September, he allegedly stole 10 packs of chicken breasts from a Krónan store in Hamraborg. The following day, he is accused of taking 12 packs of veal from a Krónan store on Norðurhella.
The most expensive individual theft listed in the indictment allegedly took place at a Lyfja store in Lágmúli in November. The man is accused of stealing skincare products worth more than 238,000 krónur.
Items ranged from foil to jackets
The alleged thefts varied considerably in value. In one case, the man is accused of stealing aluminium foil worth 449 krónur from Krónan in Hamraborg. In another, he allegedly took a bag of nuts and a bag of sweets worth 818 krónur in total.
Other alleged thefts involved two jackets from 66°Norður worth 196,000 krónur, a phone from Elko worth nearly 70,000 krónur and a hardening machine from Húsasmiðjan worth nearly 75,000 krónur.
He is also charged with attempting to steal tools worth more than 159,000 krónur from Ferro Zink in Hafnarfjörður in March. According to the indictment, employees stopped him before he could leave the store with the goods.
Twenty-three compensation claims
The indictment lists 23 compensation claims, totalling 805,385 krónur. Interest and default interest may be added if the claims are accepted.
Lyfja has submitted the largest individual claim, for more than 238,000 krónur over the alleged theft of skincare products. Elko, Krónan, Samkaup, N1, Bónus and other businesses have also filed claims.
The prosecution is also seeking a sentence and payment of all legal costs. The case will be heard by Reykjanes District Court in October.
