During the early hours of Sunday, 14 drivers lost their licenses following what authorities believe was an organized car event, referred to as a “street meet,” in Romerike, Akershus. One vehicle was recorded traveling at a staggering 234 kilometers per hour on the E6 highway, in an area with a speed limit of 90 kilometers per hour.

Both the car and the driver’s license were confiscated, with other participants caught driving at speeds ranging from 135 to 193 kilometers per hour. A prosecutor in Øst police district emphasized the seriousness of such speed violations and indicated that the drivers would face penalties, including possible suspension of their driving rights.

The traffic safety organization Trygg Trafikk expressed concerns over the reckless driving displayed at the event. They described such speeds as not only putting the driver’s life at risk but also endangering others on the road. They advocate for the introduction of electronic speed limiters in new vehicles in Norway, highlighting that the technology already exists.

While they are pushing for this measure, they acknowledge the complexities involved in its implementation. It would require political will and cooperation from car manufacturers, which they believe may not happen imminently but hope for progressive changes over time.

In contrast, NAF, the car owners’ association, has voiced skepticism regarding electronic speed limiters, citing reasons such as the potential need for drivers to occasionally exceed speed limits to allow emergency vehicles to pass and the belief that such measures may not effectively deter reckless driving. They contend that most drivers adhere to speed limits and drive responsibly.
