University student experiences mysterious eye irritation at Aarhus University in Denmark
Yesterday marked the first day back at university for Tue Thomsen, a political science student at Aarhus University, following his autumn break in week 42. However, he is unlikely to remember the lectures for the academic discussions he encountered on campus. Instead, he woke up in the middle of the night feeling irritation around his eyes. Initially dismissing it as inconsequential, he eventually had to get up and check himself in the mirror.
“When I looked in the mirror, my eyes were bright red. They began to swell, and tears started to flow,” he described. After calling the on-call doctor early in the night, he was advised that it was likely just conjunctivitis and to see his general practitioner the next day. “At that time, I could hardly navigate my phone because my vision was so blurry from all the tears.”
After falling back asleep, he woke up a few hours later to multiple missed calls from the on-call doctor, asking him to come in for an examination. On Tuesday morning, health authorities reported that several other individuals also experienced similar symptoms after spending time in the university buildings.
As of Tuesday morning, no cause for these symptoms has been identified. However, regional health officials have stated there is no immediate cause for concern. “The individuals who have reached out report mild symptoms and have not worsened. We are not seeing a rise in cases, which suggests this is not dangerous,” said Niels-Christian Emmertsen from the Prehospital unit in Central Jutland.
