For individuals suffering from autoimmune diseases affecting the intestines or urinary tract, the need for immediate bathroom access can be critical. Anja Lindberg Jensen from Rødding, Salling, knows this all too well. She suffers from Crohn’s disease, which often forces her to seek a restroom urgently.

Anja has been issued a bathroom access card that allows her to use staff restrooms in various shops, which are typically locked for general customers. “When I drink even a sip of water, my whole system reacts. Once something goes in, something has to come out,” she explains. The card simplifies her outings significantly. “When I’m out, I need to act fast. It’s comforting to show the card to the staff, who understand and don’t ask questions. It spares me from detailing my personal needs.”

The Bathroom Access Card is a project initiated by the Association for Autoimmune Diseases, aiming to help individuals like Anja quickly use restrooms when necessary. Launched in March, the initiative has gained considerable support from retailers. In recent months, the association has established agreements with 22 retail chains, despite the fact that restroom access is not a legal obligation for businesses.

To obtain the card, the association must verify that the applicant has an autoimmune condition or other situations that may require urgent restroom access. The card is free for association members; for others, it is available for a fee ranging from 100 to 200 kroner. It’s important to note that this card is intended for emergency use only and does not replace public restroom facilities.
