Politicians in Denmark’s Christiansborg must do much more to assist those living along the coastline, according to officials from Vordingborg, Sønderborg, and Faaborg municipalities. These areas faced significant damage due to a storm surge that occurred exactly one year ago. Michael Smed, the mayor of Vordingborg, expressed that the municipality, which boasts the country’s longest coastline, has received inadequate support from the state. He pointed out that a climate adaptation plan announced after the storm reserved 1.3 billion kroner for coastal protection, with 1.1 billion allocated to the West Coast of Jutland, leaving the rest of Denmark to share the remnants.

Asger Romme Andersen, chair of the Nature, Climate, and Environment Committee in Sønderborg, stated that while the municipality prioritizes funds for climate adaptation, it lacks sufficient resources to assist all areas affected by the storm. He warned that without help from Christiansborg, the burden would fall entirely on municipalities, impacting public welfare.

The storm was classified as a 100-year event, causing significant destruction, particularly in Aabenraa, where water levels surged 216 centimeters above normal, leading to evacuations due to a ruptured watertube. Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke acknowledged the urgent need to protect Danish coastlines against future storm surges. He emphasized the necessity for collective solutions involving the state, municipalities, and property owners, stressing that it is inadequate for individual homeowners to safeguard their properties alone against rising groundwater and coastal threats.

While Heunicke could not guarantee immediate funding, he confirmed that a new climate adaptation plan is in progress, aimed at providing comprehensive support across all coastal regions of Denmark, not just the West Coast.
