Reykjavik mayor Einar Þorsteinsson apologizes for remarks about teachers
Reykjavik’s mayor, Einar Þorsteinsson, has issued an apology for recent remarks he made about teachers, acknowledging their negative impact on the teaching profession. He met with educators today at the City Hall to address the concern.
During a panel discussion last week, Þorsteinsson made comments suggesting that teachers are requesting to spend less time with students, are weaker than ever, and are teaching less. He later reflected, “I realized that my comments were completely counterproductive to teachers, and I found that regrettable, so I apologized at this meeting for being so unprepared.”
The mayor explained that he was discussing issues related to teaching conditions and highlighted alarming statistics regarding sick leave among teachers. However, he admitted that the way he expressed these concerns was misguided.
Teachers have voiced discontent with the mayor’s statements, emphasizing that his remarks were unnecessary. They believe it’s crucial to create a supportive work environment for educators.
In the meeting, Þorsteinsson noted that it was a productive discussion, stating, “We agree much more than we disagree on what needs to be done in the education system. One key area is ensuring that teachers feel good in their jobs, are happy, and have the opportunity to teach and care for children.”
