Independence Party voters least likely to back EU talks

Only 9 per cent of Independence Party voters say they intend to vote yes in Iceland’s planned referendum on restarting membership talks with the European Union, according to a new Gallup poll published by mbl.is.

Among voters for the Centre Party and Progressive Party, 14 per cent said they would vote yes. Support was highest among voters for the Reform Party, at 98 per cent, followed by the Social Democratic Alliance at 93 per cent, the Left-Green Movement at 76 per cent and the People’s Party at 60 per cent.

Overall, 51.5 per cent of respondents who expressed a preference said they would vote yes, while 48.5 per cent said they would vote no. The difference is not statistically significant, meaning the poll cannot establish whether support is higher for either side.

University graduates were more likely to support restarting the talks than respondents whose highest education was primary or secondary school. Support stood at 63 per cent among university graduates, compared with 45 per cent among those with only primary education and 47 per cent among those with secondary education.

Residents of the capital region were also more likely to say yes than people living outside the region, at 57 per cent compared with 42 per cent.

Gallup conducted the poll from August 1 to 13, 2026. It included 4,128 people, with a participation rate of 41.9 per cent. The referendum will be held on August 29.
