Last week, the Swedish Consumer Agency proposed stricter regulations for phone sales following concerns raised about the Social Democrats’ lottery sales practices. The agency’s director, Cecilia Tisell, labeled the sales method problematic. The agency’s proposal includes allowing companies to contact only consumers who have previously given consent or those with whom they already have a business relationship.

A majority of parties in the parliament support this model. According to reports, both the Christian Democrats and the Sweden Democrats endorse the proposal, as does the Left Party, which seeks to ban all phone sales. The Social Democrats, who suspended their telephone lottery sales amid scrutiny of aggressive sales tactics, also view the proposal favorably. The Green Party and the Liberals express a desire to investigate the issue further.

In contrast, the Centre Party and the Moderates suggest that the industry should address these problems on its own, with the Moderates opposing the proposal.
