During today’s municipal council meeting, the council of Tvøroyri will discuss a consultation document concerning the construction and expansion of the harbor in Tvøroyri.

The Nature Preservation Committee in the Suðuroy region is reviewing the construction project proposed by Varðin Pelagic in Tvøroyri.

There are two key issues at stake.

The government has the authority to issue a decree stating that constructions in specific areas should not be subject to review by the preservation authority.

However, this decree is not currently in effect.

In 2012/2013, such a decree was established, allowing the government, based on recommendations from the Preservation Authority and the relevant municipal government, to lift restrictions on certain defined areas that naturally fall under existing building sites or harbor areas.

This serves as an exception to the regulations concerning construction within tidal zones.

The decree was created amid the belief that it was in effect. However, it was never formally announced, leading to confusion when Varðin Pelagic applied for permission to expand their facilities.

As a result, the Nature Preservation Committee in Suðuroy has decided to address both matters— the existing construction and the proposed expansion— anew under the stipulations set forth in the nature preservation legislation.
