Kombispel, the lottery company associated with the Social Democrats in Sweden, is facing significant backlash following an investigation revealing its aggressive telemarketing practices. Reports indicate that these methods have spanned several years.

Olga Öhrn, who started working as a telemarketer for Kombilotter at age 16 in 2013, recounted tactics used to mislead customers. She and other former employees highlighted that many calls targeted elderly individuals and emphasized that rejection was not an option. Instructions from the company encouraged sales personnel to obscure the nature of subscription services.

An environment of deceit seemingly permeated the operations. Employees recount being instructed not to disclose the Social Democrats’ involvement in the lottery. According to several ex-employees from telemarketing firms used by Kombispel, this misleading approach persisted despite prior warnings from the Swedish Gambling Authority.

In December 2016, the Social Democrats received a formal reprimand for failing to clarify their role in lottery promotions. Yet, the controversial practices continued, prompting statements from current party officials, including party secretary Tobias Baudin, who condemned such unethical behavior in sales. To address the ongoing issues, Baudin announced a definitive end to the use of telemarketing firms by Kombispel.

The situation reflects a broader pattern of problematic marketing strategies that have drawn public and regulatory scrutiny over the years, raising concerns about transparency and consumer rights. The Social Democrats, now under pressure, have faced significant damage to their reputation as these revelations come to light.
