Pål Golberg, the Norwegian cross-country skier, addressed the media in Oslo on Tuesday during a training camp this week. He expressed that the excitement surrounding head-to-head competitions is crucial for the sport’s popularity. In recent years, following the departure of Russian athletes from the scene, Norwegian competitors have primarily been racing against themselves.

“We dominate international men’s cross-country skiing, and what sells best is duels. We need to enhance international competition to bring those duels back. It’s not going to happen overnight. Currently, there’s a significant generational shift in international skiing, but while Norway has a good influx of talent, it doesn’t guarantee the landscape will look the same in three to four years,” said Golberg.

The 34-year-old from Gol is concerned about the overall state of the sport, yet he believes there is no “quick fix” to the issue of Norwegian dominance. He noted that while cross-country skiing is deeply ingrained in Norwegian culture, fostering that interest internationally is challenging.

Regarding the ski federation’s role, Golberg expressed confidence. “I believe the Norwegian ski federation is doing enough. Ultimately, the responsibility lies with the International Ski Federation. If they consider reallocating their resources, we should embrace that. There are no signs that Russian athletes will return soon, and I don’t believe the short-term solution is purely financial.”

Golberg also highlighted the average age of the Norwegian men’s national team, which was 31.5 last season. However, this year they have introduced younger athletes, hinting at a gradual transition in the team.

On the topic of sponsors, Golberg acknowledged the changes ahead as two major sponsors exit after the World Championship season but remains optimistic about the opportunities for new partnerships. “It provides us a chance to bring in new sponsors, and I feel positive about the marketing efforts within the ski federation,” he stated.
