Finland’s electoral system faces a new challenge next April, as regional and municipal elections will be held simultaneously. The aim is to boost interest in both elections; however, analysts warn the outcome might be the opposite. Markku Jokisipilä, director of the Centre for Parliamentary Studies at Turku University, highlights concerns over declining voter turnout. He notes that the recent regional elections saw disappointing engagement, with only 47.5% participation, compared to 55.1% in the 2021 municipal elections.
Jokisipilä stresses that the effectiveness of party campaigns will be crucial. Voter awareness of the importance of these elections is also a key factor. The dual elections imply that voters will need to manage two ballots and candidate numbers, which may lead to confusion. Candidates must advocate for both their home municipality and the welfare region, which could increase the risk of invalid votes.
Political parties report that candidate recruitment is in the early stages but progressing well. Wider candidate lists for the regional elections will be announced in the coming weeks. Heidi Aaltonen, chair of the Raisio regional council group for the Green League, confirmed her candidacy for both elections, stating that impacting the welfare area is her primary focus.
For Valtti Suvanto, an 18-year-old candidate from Turku, the municipal elections take precedence. He aims to campaign mainly through social media while also engaging voters in public spaces. Suvanto, who has experience in youth council activities, believes in the importance of influencing policies to drive change.
