The Helsinki police reported receiving a notification at the beginning of June regarding suspected serious money laundering, with the alleged crime occurring in May. According to the report, an unidentified individual deceived a young man into making large cash withdrawals from his bank account. The victim, in his twenties, was approached by this unknown person while at a nightclub. The individual asked him to withdraw €4,000 and transfer it to his account, claiming to be a wealthy cryptocurrency investor.

A few days later, €20,000 appeared in the young man’s account. He then informed the unknown person via a messaging app that he could withdraw the initially agreed amount. However, the individual began to threaten him, prompting the victim to withdraw an additional €10,000 in cash. Besides withdrawing money, the young man also exchanged currency and purchased phones for the alleged extortionist.

Authorities are now investigating the young man for serious money laundering. In a statement, the police highlighted that money mules are often teenagers or young adults targeted by criminals in settings like bars, shopping malls, messaging services, and social media. The funds involved typically originate from drug-related, weapons, or fraud crimes.

The investigation leader, Crime Commissioner Teemu Haapala, indicated that young individuals may not fully comprehend that they are engaging in money laundering. He emphasized the importance of awareness, stating that if someone asks for such assistance, alarm bells should ring. The police also warned that becoming a money mule can have lasting repercussions on a young person’s future, potentially disqualifying them from various job opportunities due to a possible money laundering conviction.
