In Vähässäkyrö, Finland, a bank ATM was destroyed in a blast during the early hours of the morning. Police received the alert at 2:19 AM. The ATM was completely obliterated, but it remains unclear whether the perpetrators made off with any cash. As of Wednesday morning, details about the type of explosives used were still unknown.
According to Mikko Uusimäki, the lead investigator from the Ostrobothnia police department, officers detected the scent of an explosive upon arrival. Uusimäki suggested that the explosion was significant, leading to total destruction of the machine. The ATM was located in Tervajoki’s town center, situated between two shops, which reportedly also suffered damage from the blast wave. Uusimäki noted that the method employed was unusual, as most robberies involve prying the machine from the wall rather than using explosives.
The police are appealing for information regarding the incident, asking anyone with observations or tips, particularly about individuals or vehicles around Loukontie, to come forward. Tips can be submitted via email at [email protected] or by calling 0295 415 501. A technical investigation is underway at the scene, with authorities interviewing neighbors and checking for surveillance cameras that may have captured relevant footage.
Local students from Savilahti Unified School had their cycling trip interrupted upon witnessing police activity and media presence at the site, which they found unusual for Tervajoki. While the scene reminded some of a movie heist, the students expressed that the area is typically very calm, with little to no vandalism occurring.
