Recruit at Santahamina garrison hospitalised after severe food allergy reaction, future military service in doubt
A recruit at the Santahamina garrison suffered a severe allergic reaction to food on Monday, resulting in him being transported to the hospital. The soldier experienced the allergic reaction in the garrison’s cafeteria, prompting an ambulance to be summoned.
This incident is considered an isolated case, and the cause of the allergic reaction is unknown.
Individuals with special dietary needs are provided with separate meals in the garrison restaurant, in accordance with their dietary requirements. These special servings are prepared separately from the rest of the food. The soldier’s meal had been prepared taking into account his allergies.
No additional details about the health of the soldiers can be provided. The recruit’s father had previously informed that the symptoms appeared after the first meal. His son has multiple food allergies, of which detailed information had been submitted to the defense forces.
The recruit’s airways became blocked and he is currently in the garrison with a fever of 39.5 degrees.
As a result of the incident, the recruit will be discharged from service either temporarily or permanently. The father believes it is likely that his son will be completely discharged from service, as the state does not want to risk anyone getting injured.
