Brutal killing of pet cat in Finland under police investigation, community in fear
A pet cat was found dead in a brutal and disturbing incident that took place in Mynämäki, Finland, between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. The cat’s owner, Outi, discovered the body of her pet on Wednesday morning. Outi began searching for her cat after realizing, through a tracking collar, that it had not returned home for the night and had stayed in the same location about 300 meters from their house for roughly five hours.
Contrary to her initial suspicion that the cat might have been hit by a car, the injuries did not suggest such an accident. Instead, Outi found a hole in the cat’s head and its tracking collar torn off and lying next to the body. It became clear that the cat had been cruelly killed and tortured after Outi took the body to the vet for a post-mortem examination.
According to the vet’s report, the cat died as a result of prolonged violence. It did not die instantly but suffered intense pain due to bleeding and shock. The report suggests the cat likely resisted and was forcibly restrained, with its head injuries likely inflicted with a filleting knife, similar sharp weapon, an arrow, or other sharp object. The cat had three puncture wounds in its head, one of which could have been caused by an arrow from a crossbow. The report concluded that the injuries were caused by a human, not another animal.
Outi lives in a rural area with several other detached houses nearby. The shocking incident has left all the neighbors fearful, especially those with pets. For the time being, neighbors are keeping their pets indoors, as is Outi, who is now afraid to let her dogs outside in her backyard or let her other surviving cat out.
Outi said that before its violent death, her cat used to move around near their house and always returned indoors to sleep at night. She emphasized that the cat’s movements were supervised. The last time she saw the cat alive was on the edge of the field in front of their house the evening before the incident.
The brutal way the cat was killed has deeply disturbed Outi. She expressed concern that if such people are free, they must be brought into care and held accountable for their actions. The police in Southwest Finland are investigating the case preliminarily as an animal protection violation and hunting violation. The investigation is in its early stages and there are no suspects yet.
