Ilkka Sasi, the Deputy Mayor of Tampere, has been dismissed from his position following a vote by the Tampere City Council on Monday evening, which passed with 54 in favor, 2 against, and 11 abstentions. The reason for his dismissal is the loss of trust from the council.
The loss of confidence stems from earlier allegations against Sasi this year, including sexual harassment and alcohol-related offenses. Due to these suspicions, the city council’s groups, the National Coalition Party (kok.) and the Swedish People’s Party (RKP), expelled him from their ranks in August due to misconduct and lack of trust. At the end of August, it was clarified that Sasi would not face charges.
As the council discussed his case, Sasi chose to leave the meeting beforehand. In a previous incident, Sasi had met two 17-year-old women and their 20-year-old friend at a McDonald’s, leading them to his apartment where he provided them with alcohol, unaware of their underage status at the time.
Despite the council’s decision to dismiss him, several members defended Sasi during the meeting. Notably, representatives from the Finns Party and the Christian Democrats voiced objections against the dismissal. Marika Puolimatka from the Finns Party argued against the motion, stating that the grounds for distrust were insufficient. Christian Democrat Sari Tanus expressed regret that the coalition groups did not address the matter internally, criticizing the temporary committee for not hearing Sasi’s side.
Petri Rajala from the National Coalition Party highlighted concerns regarding the lack of concrete reasoning supporting the dismissal decision, while other council members questioned the implications of setting such a precedent. The story is developing.
