Lapin Kansa reduces print editions to three per week amid distribution challenges in Lapland

Monday 16th September 2024 on 15:55 in Finland

Starting this week, the regional newspaper Lapin Kansa will publish three print editions per week, a reduction of fifty percent from its previous schedule. The new publication days are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The newspaper had already stopped producing Sunday editions about ten years ago, and now it will also cease the publication of Saturday print editions, with an extended Friday edition serving as the weekend issue.

The online version of the newspaper will continue to be available six days a week, as it has been. The changes are attributed to the high costs associated with distribution in Lapland, which presents distinct challenges due to the region’s vast distances and lower population density compared to other parts of Finland.

Editor Sauli Pahkasalo commented on the decision, emphasizing the aim of minimizing impacts on staffing levels while scaling back distribution efforts. Pahkasalo noted a mixed response to the changes from readers. During his visits to all 21 municipalities in Lapland in July, he heard disappointment from some residents. Many wanted clarity on the reasoning behind the changes and guidance on transitioning to digital formats. However, he also received encouraging messages, reflecting a range of feedback from the community.
