Support for Independence Party narrows in Iceland’s latest polling data
Recent polling data indicates a narrow gap in support between the Independence Party and the Midfield Party in Iceland. According to the latest Gallup National Pulse, approximately a quarter of respondents back the sitting government. The Left-Green Movement maintains the highest level of support, consistent with earlier findings.
The ongoing decline in support for the Independence Party has been matched by gains for the Midfield Party. Current statistics reveal that the Independence Party has 17% support, while the Midfield Party closely follows with 16%. This marks a tripling of the Midfield Party’s support compared to their performance in the 2021 elections.
The Social Democrats are reported as the largest party in the latest polling, with a notable 26% backing from respondents. Coming in after them are the Independence Party and the Midfield Party. Other parties, such as the Reform Party, the Pirates, and the People’s Party, show varying levels of support at 10%, 8%, and 7%, respectively. The Socialist Party trails close behind at nearly 6%, while the Left-Green Movement remains stagnant around 3%.
Government support stands at 25% among respondents if elections were held today, indicating stability compared to the last survey in July.
Should these figures reflect actual seat distribution in Parliament, the Independence Party would secure 11 seats, the Midfield Party 10, and the Social Democrats would emerge as the largest party with 20 seats. The Reform Party would win six seats, the Pirates five, and the People’s Party four, while the Socialist Party would earn three. The Left-Green Movement would not secure any seats. Approximately 5,000 Icelanders participated in last month’s survey.
