Pétur Jökull Jónasson sentenced to eight years for largest cocaine smuggling case in Icelandic history
Pétur Jökull Jónasson has been sentenced to eight years in prison by the Reykjavik District Court for his involvement in the largest cocaine smuggling case in Icelandic history. The prosecution had requested a six-year sentence.
Previously, four individuals had been convicted in this case for smuggling 100 kilograms of cocaine, which was meticulously hidden in seven wooden barrels. These barrels were in a shipping container sent from Brazil to Iceland, stopping in Rotterdam in July of last year. The police uncovered the smuggling operation through information gathered from a large money laundering investigation and data from an encrypted messaging app. The cocaine never reached Iceland; Dutch customs officials in Rotterdam confiscated the substance and replaced it with fake material.
A key element of the trial was the debate over whether Pétur Jökull was the organizer behind the operation, which was referred to by the codename “Nonni” in communications on the Signal app.
Investigations continue into whether Pétur Jökull is indeed the individual known as “Nonni” in the cocaine case. Further updates on the case are expected.
