Tapio Siltala has discovered an innovative way to make use of the abundant harvest from his apple tree. He first crushes the apples with a branch shredder and then presses the juice using a log splitter. The idea arose when a local juice station in Jämsänkoski ceased operations. With so many apples to spare, he found himself having to give them away or throw them away. Realizing the potential of his newly acquired vertical log splitter, Siltala thought it could be repurposed as a juicer.
This year, Siltala’s apple press has been remarkably productive, yielding nearly 200 liters of juice. He freezes the juice in plastic bottles, ensuring there is enough not only for himself but also for friends and acquaintances. He praises the taste of his freshly pressed juice, noting that its flavor varies based on the apple variety and ripeness.
Ari Kallio from Alajärvi reports harvesting over 300 kilograms of apples this year, which has produced about 180 liters of juice. Last year’s surplus lasted well into early spring. Kallio processes his apples at a local juice station, calculating the cost of one liter to be around two euros.
Meanwhile, Laila Juuti from Lappeenranta has an abundance of apples and shares her intentions for them in a video, emphasizing traditional apple recipes.
Readers from Yle’s website have enthusiastically shared their ideas for using apples, which include making fresh juice, various jams, dried apples, apple pie for winter storage, and apple wine. Some apples are given to neighbors, kindergartens, and social welfare institutions. Many enjoy cooking and preserving apple-based products to share with their communities.
