Metso discusses temporary layoffs affecting 560 employees at Tampere factory in Finland
Metso has initiated discussions regarding temporary layoffs at its factory in Tampere, which manufactures crushing equipment. These negotiations will not only involve the Tampere facility but also encompass all operations and personnel associated with the crushing business in Finland. Approximately 560 employees are affected by these negotiations.
The potential layoff period could last up to 90 days, with the implementation timeline set for late 2024 and early 2025. These layoffs may impact all staff groups within the scope of the negotiations.
The reason for this action is attributed to weak demand. According to the company’s statement, the order backlog at the Tampere facility is low, while finished product inventories are at high levels. The second half of the year is traditionally quieter for the crushing business, making any immediate improvement in demand unlikely.
Additionally, there has been a global decrease in demand for mobile equipment, compounded by high inventory levels among distributors in North America, which further reduces the need for new machines. In light of these circumstances, Metso finds it necessary to adjust its capacity in response to a temporary decline in workload and to achieve cost savings.
