Court begins appeal proceedings in unusual homicide case from Hiiros, Oulu

The Rovaniemi Court of Appeal today begins its proceedings regarding an unusual homicide that occurred in Hiiros, Oulu. An 18-year-old woman was suffocated in a sofa’s divan box in November 2022, following a violent debt collection process. The victim’s hands and feet were bound, her mouth was gagged with fabric, and a plastic bag was placed over her head before she was placed inside the sofa. She died slowly from asphyxiation.

In the first-instance court, 41-year-old Tiina Pia Susanna Seppänen and 40-year-old Ari Ossi Petteri Suorsa were sentenced to life imprisonment for murder. This verdict was issued last year. Both have denied the charges and appealed the decision to the Court of Appeal, which will begin hearing the appeals today. The session is scheduled to start at 12 PM, with media coverage by Yle.

In addition to the convicted pair, others have also been sentenced and have filed appeals. Among them is a man born in 1983, found to have subjected the victim to torturous violence days before her murder, including tying her up and burning her skin with a cigarette. He received a sentence of three years and three months for aggravated robbery and unlawful confinement, also denying the charges and seeking a lesser sentence on appeal.

Another individual present during the debt collection incident, convicted of basic robbery, has also filed an appeal. Furthermore, the prosecutor has appealed for harsher penalties for those involved in the violent debt collection.

In the initial court proceedings, two others were also charged with murder, but the charges were dismissed for them, and the prosecutor chose not to appeal in those instances. The prosecutor is not seeking changes regarding the convictions of the two sentenced individuals either. Further updates will follow.
