Explosion at apartment in Helsinki leaves two hospitalized

In Helsinki, two individuals have been hospitalized following an explosion at an apartment. Details about their condition remain unclear. According to police, there were two people inside the apartment at the time of the incident, both of whom have been taken to the hospital.

Neighbors were awakened by a loud bang around 4:20 AM. One resident, Arja Kajander, reported, “I woke up ten minutes before my alarm to a terrible explosion; the glasses were rattling. Someone shouted for help.” She mentioned that shortly thereafter, sirens could be heard and the area around the apartment building is now in disarray due to the explosion. Kajander added that the residents of the affected apartment have previously caused disturbances in the building.

The explosion occurred at Märssykuja 1 at approximately 4:20 AM. Police were able to enter the apartment only after ensuring it was safe, confirming that no further damage could occur. The area has been cordoned off. “Work safety must be ensured, and the police are now working to determine that the apartment is safe to enter. After that, permission can be granted to begin the actual technical investigations,” a spokesperson from the Helsinki police stated.

Authorities are working with the fire department to investigate what happened, but at this time, there is no certainty about the exact cause of the explosion. The alert for the explosion risk at Märssykuja in Meri-Rastila was raised around 4:30 AM. The incident reportedly concerns a single apartment in the building, and no evacuations have taken place as a result.
