A man known as “David” has openly discussed his struggles with being attracted to children while emphasizing the importance of seeking help. David, who has not acted on these feelings and is not a convicted criminal, believes that increased openness and understanding of pedophilia could encourage others in his situation to seek assistance and help prevent abuse.
Three years ago, David sought help from a service called “There is Help,” which he found to be supportive and provided crucial information about confidentiality. He highlights the need for more understanding in society to reduce stigma and promote help-seeking behavior.
David expresses frustration with negative media portrayals of individuals labeled as pedophiles. He suggests that many reports equate the term “pedophile” exclusively with being an abuser, which can hinder those with such attractions from seeking help. He argues that the recent emergence of self-styled “pedohunters,” who often resort to violence, exacerbates fears and isolation felt by individuals like him.
Marie Nyland, a police prosecutor, stresses that actions taken by these groups that result in violence are criminal. She urges anyone who suspects illegal behavior to contact law enforcement rather than taking matters into their own hands.
Dr. Anne Wold, a specialist at Oslo University Hospital, notes that while it is deeply stigmatized to have sexual feelings for minors, research suggests that 2% of adult men might have such attractions. Since 2020, about 300 individuals have accessed support services aimed at preventing abuse.
David emphasizes the critical role of having someone to confide in regarding his feelings, which has helped him find understanding and acceptance in his own identity.
