People’s Party backs Heimir after nuclear missile appeal

Heimir Már Pétursson retains the full confidence of the People’s Party parliamentary group after urging French President Emmanuel Macron to ready his nuclear missiles for attacks, mbl.is reported.

Ásthildur Lóa Þórsdóttir, the group’s chair, told Iceland’s public broadcaster RÚV that Heimir’s comments had not been discussed at the group’s meeting on Monday morning. She said he had apologised and that the matter was closed for the party.

Heimir, the group’s executive director, made the appeal in a reply to a post by Macron on X. In a statement to the media on Friday, he apologised for his remarks and deleted both the post and his X account.

Heimir also sits on the board of RÚV.
