Garðabær’s primary care clinic may move from Garðatorg to Vetrarmýri, a new neighbourhood under development, mbl.is reports. The clinic needs more space, and the town’s mayor said this week that a move was likely.

Mayor Almar Guðmundsson said at a residents’ meeting that the change would improve the town’s healthcare facilities, which residents have long called for. He cautioned, however, that the capital-area primary healthcare service and the developer still need to meet all the requirements and sign an agreement.

Sigríður Dóra Magnúsdóttir, director of the capital-area primary healthcare service, confirmed that talks are under way with the owners of a development plot. The proposal is for the clinic to occupy one floor of a building planned for the area. She said several requirements for establishing a clinic at a particular location remain unmet, and work is continuing to address them.

“It is long overdue that the clinic in Garðabær is expanded,” Sigríður told mbl.is. The aim is to provide more space for a broader range of services. If the negotiations succeed, the move could take place one to two years after construction begins. Sigríður stressed that nothing is settled until an agreement is signed, noting that the service previously had to abandon talks over another promising premises.

Vetrarmýri is a 20-hectare development area owned by Garðabær. It is bordered by Hnoðraholt to the north, Reykjanesbraut to the west, Vífilsstaðavegur to the south and the GKG golf course to the east.
