Cod fry quantities decrease while haddock fry remains above average around Faroe Bank

This year, there is a decreased amount of cod fry on the continental shelf compared to the last two years, according to fry and species assessments conducted by Jákup Sverri in late June.

The Marine Research Institute reports that when examining the period from 1983 to 2024, the quantities of cod, capelin, and herring fry are below average, while haddock fry is above average.

Significant variations in quantity were noted across different regions. The highest quantities of fry were found in the western and northeastern parts of the continental shelf. In contrast, there was a significant presence of plant life across the shelf.

Around the Faroe Bank, quantities of cod fry were at record highs last year. However, this year has seen a drop in cod fry, though levels remain above the average for the period from 1991 to 2024. Haddock fry quantities are well above average, while capelin fry is notably sparse around the Faroe Bank.

Furthermore, there was little plant life on the Bank, with quantities smaller than those observed on the continental shelf and in the surrounding waters, as noted by the Marine Research Institute.
