Daniel Sazonov, the 31-year-old deputy mayor and member of Helsinki’s city council, has announced his candidacy for the position of mayor of Helsinki in the upcoming elections. “After thorough reflection and numerous encouragements, I have concluded that I am interested in the role of mayor and am available as a candidate for the National Coalition Party,” Sazonov stated.

As mayor, Sazonov aims to elevate Helsinki’s ambitions in various sectors, particularly in attracting international talent to local businesses. He would also emphasize that decision-making should prioritize the fact that Helsinki is fundamentally a home for its residents, ensuring that services operate effectively and daily life runs smoothly. Additionally, he stresses the importance of the careful implementation of decisions made collaboratively.

Current mayor Juhana Vartiainen of the National Coalition Party announced on Wednesday that he will not seek re-election. Traditionally in Helsinki, the mayoral position is awarded to the largest party represented in the new city council elected during municipal elections. The next municipal elections are scheduled for April 2025.
