A storm moving from the North Atlantic is heading towards Finland, with strong winds expected from Sunday morning until Monday evening, Yle reports, citing its meteorologist Matti Huutonen.

Winds are forecast to reach storm force in western sea areas on Sunday, with speeds of 21 metres per second. Gusts could reach 15 metres per second in parts of southern and western Finland.

Falling trees and power cuts are possible on Sunday evening, particularly in southwest Finland. Wind warnings are in force for southern and western Finland.

“So far, this year has been fairly quiet in terms of storms,” Huutonen said. Finland has had five storm days this year, and Sunday could bring the sixth. The annual average is 29 storm days.

Strong winds are expected to continue on Monday, alongside scattered rain showers moving across the country. Eastern and northern Finland are expected to avoid the strongest conditions.
