A Norðurorka district heating pipe broke in Akureyri on Saturday morning, leaving several nearby streets without water, mbl.is reported.

Work to replace pipes was under way at the junction of Byggðavegur and Hamarsstígur when an excavator struck a service connection to the main pipe, Guðmann Böðvarsson, a machine operator at Norðurorka, told mbl.is.

Repair parts were being made, and the pipe was expected to be fixed by midday. Langamýri, Kringlumýri and Hrafnabjörg were expected to remain without water until then.

Böðvarsson said the damage was not extensive and that such accidents happen from time to time. He said he heard about the incident at 10 a.m.
