The Rovaniemi Court of Appeal has sentenced a young individual from Ylivieska, who committed a stabbing at school, to 3 years and 7 months in prison. This decision comes as an increase from the initial sentence of 3 years handed down by the District Court last November.
The incident occurred at Kaisaniemi school in North Ostrobothnia when the 16-year-old attacked a fellow student, a 15-year-old boy, with a knife towards the end of March 2023. The stabbing took place inside the school, where the assailant struck the victim in the back. Although the victim was in serious danger, he ultimately survived the attack.
In its ruling, the Court of Appeal considered the perpetrator’s young age and diminished responsibility in a manner similar to the District Court. The convicted teenager had requested a reduced sentence during the appeal proceedings, while the prosecutor argued for a more severe sentence of 5 years. The prosecutor justified this request by citing evidence that the boy had fantasized about the violent act beforehand and had prepared by reading online articles and discussions related to violence and homicide.
