A historic sawmill in Pori, Finland, known as Vanha Isosannan, was completely destroyed by a fire that broke out overnight between Wednesday and Thursday. The Satakunta rescue service received an alert about the large building fire at 1:36 AM, dispatching 15 units to the scene. According to the rescue service, the building was already fully engulfed in flames when the first firefighting units arrived.
Initially, the priority for the rescue teams was to protect nearby industrial buildings on Konepajanranta from the intense heat and sparks generated by the fire. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries from the accident.
Firefighting and clearance operations are still ongoing and are expected to continue well into the morning. The Isosannan sawmill was constructed in 1920 and covered an area of 2,500 square meters. It ceased operations in 1939 and had been preserved as a historical landmark within Porin’s industrial landscape, given its protected status.
Updates on the situation are forthcoming.
