Autumn equinox brings nearly equal day and night

Wednesday marks the autumn equinox, when day and night are approximately the same length around the world, Yle reports.

During the equinox, the Sun shines directly over the equator. Afterward, sunlight increasingly reaches the Southern Hemisphere, while the Northern Hemisphere receives less light.

Days in the Northern Hemisphere will grow shorter until the winter solstice at the end of December. In Finland, days will soon become shorter in the north than in the south.
