The ongoing debate about the reputation of Drammen, a city in Norway, continues to be a topic of discussion on social media. Often associated with the term “harry,” which implies being unsophisticated or provincial, Drammen’s image is polarizing. Critics, including social scientist Per Gunnar Røe, point out that a negative reputation can hinder urban development and attract fewer investments. Røe suggests that while it’s possible for a city to change its image, this requires more than just marketing; it necessitates genuine improvements and inclusivity.

In contrast, some residents believe that the negative label is outdated. For instance, Inger Lise Hallgren argues that being labeled “harry” indicates diversity and should be embraced rather than stigmatized. On the other hand, 22-year-old Frida Bern has absorbed the negative views of Drammen from childhood and readily points to it as the most “harry” city.

Social economist Øystein Berge observes that Drammen’s reputation is deteriorating, with more negative sentiments reflected in population growth rates and social media narratives. While the city has strong potential for reshaping its image due to its location and ongoing development projects, attracting highly educated young women is crucial for reversing its fortunes.

However, Drammen’s mayor, Kjell Arne Hermansen, contests claims of a negative trajectory. He believes that the city is evolving positively and remains welcoming. Despite recent controversies, Hermansen doubts that they have significantly tarnished Drammen’s overall reputation. The city’s ability to redefine itself remains an ongoing challenge amid mixed perceptions.
