BMW driver suspected of seven offences after hitting 17-year-old scooter rider

Police have completed a preliminary investigation into a case in which a BMW driver allegedly deliberately drove into a 17-year-old scooter rider at a pedestrian crossing in Kuopio in June, Yle reports.

The driver of a black BMW is suspected of hitting the teenager on Hulkontie at considerable speed. The rider was thrown onto the car and hung on it for some time.

Police have regarded the collision as deliberate from the outset. Investigators found no other apparent motive in questioning than the driver’s severe intoxication, said Tiina Borg, the detective chief inspector leading the investigation.

Police suspect a man born in the late 1990s of attempted manslaughter, aggravated endangerment of traffic safety, aggravated drunk driving, a narcotics use offence and an aggravated firearms offence.

The firearm was not connected to the collision and was not used during the incident or the arrest. The man also allegedly had no driving licence and had taken the car without permission. He is therefore additionally suspected of unauthorised use of a motor vehicle and driving without a licence.

According to police, the teenager did not suffer life-threatening injuries and was not hospitalised because of the incident.

The case was referred for consideration of charges at the end of August.
