Norway mirrors global champagne sales decline amidst rising wine alternatives

Global champagne sales have experienced a decline of 15.2% compared to last year, and Norway is mirroring this trend. A senior executive from the luxury goods conglomerate LVMH attributes this drop to global unrest affecting people’s celebratory spirit. However, wine journalist Ingvild Tennfjord disagrees, suggesting that economic uncertainty and rising champagne prices are more likely culprits. She notes the influx of various sparkling alternatives, providing consumers more choices.

Traditionally associated with celebrations, the sound of a champagne cork popping is less frequently heard in recent times. Statistics from Norway’s Vinmonopolet show that overall alcohol consumption has decreased by 5% this year, with champagne sales dropping by 14% until July.

Tennfjord highlights a shift in consumer behavior, where people are turning to more affordable sparkling wines like English sparkling, which saw a 20% increase in sales. She also notes a significant rise in non-alcoholic beverage sales, marking a 25% increase this year.

Industry observations indicate that during economically challenging times, luxury goods like champagne are among the first to decline in sales. Meanwhile, producers of smaller-scale beverages, such as cider from Egge farm, report stable sales and a growing interest in local products.

Despite the downturn in global champagne sales, figures like Aune Sand, a prominent champagne enthusiast, maintain their dedication to the classic bubbly. Sand expressed his unwavering love for champagne, indicating that while alternatives exist, he remains loyal to the French delicacy.
