Palestinian Red Crescent president to discuss humanitarian situation

Dr Younis Al-Khatib, president of the Palestinian Red Crescent, will discuss the humanitarian situation in Palestine at a public meeting in Iceland on Thursday, mbl.is reports.

The meeting, organised by Iceland’s National Committee on International Humanitarian Law and the University of Iceland’s Institute of International Affairs, will take place from noon to 1 p.m. in the meeting room of the National Museum of Iceland. It will also be streamed live.

Al-Khatib will address the challenges and achievements shaping the Palestinian Red Crescent’s work, as well as its relationship with international humanitarian law, which the Red Cross and Red Crescent movements uphold globally.

Martin Eyjólfsson, permanent secretary at Iceland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, will deliver the opening remarks. Ingibjörg Halldórsdóttir, director of the Icelandic Red Cross, will give the closing remarks.

The meeting will be chaired by Anna Pála Sverrisdóttir, head of international law affairs at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and chair of the National Committee on International Humanitarian Law.

The committee was established in 2008. Its duties include spreading knowledge of international humanitarian law and providing a forum for discussion of the subject. It consists of representatives from government ministries and the Icelandic Red Cross, with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs holding the chairmanship.
