Firefighters tackle fires at school and industrial building

The Capital Area Fire and Rescue Service responded to two fires overnight, at Rimaskóli school in Grafarvogur and at an industrial building in Garðabær, mbl.is reports.

At around 1 a.m., firefighters were alerted to smoke at Rimaskóli, where roof cladding had caught fire.

Sigurjón Hendriksson, a shift supervisor with the fire service, said flames were burning in an intermediate ceiling space and had spread to the roof cladding. Access to the fire was difficult, so all four fire stations were called out along with two ladder trucks.

He said the firefighting operation went well and took about two hours. The cause of the fire remains unclear.

Before the operation at Rimaskóli had ended, firefighters were called to a food company in an industrial building in Garðabær. A baking oven had malfunctioned, sending considerable smoke through the building and causing substantial damage.
