Parcel lockers collect tonnes of batteries and textiles in Aalborg

Parcel lockers in Aalborg and Nørresundby have collected 4.7 tonnes of hazardous waste and four tonnes of textile waste since last summer, DR reports.

The lockers are part of a project by Aalborg Municipality that allows residents of apartment buildings to dispose of used batteries and damaged clothing close to their homes.

Martin Quintero Hansen, a project manager in the municipality’s climate department, said the amount of waste collected is increasing.

“Every time the locker is opened and every time it is emptied, we register it. So we can see that the amount of waste in the lockers is increasing,” he said.

The lockers are available around the clock. Lisbeth Eeg, the municipality’s communications manager, said the system made disposal easier for residents and improved waste sorting.

Previously, apartment residents had to contact a caretaker or travel to a recycling centre to dispose of this type of waste. The municipality says bringing collection points closer to residents can prevent waste from ending up in household residual waste.
