Police warn of scam emails falsely invoking judicial police

mbl.is reports that Iceland’s Office of the National Police Commissioner has received reports of scam emails falsely presenting the police as the sender.

The emails contain an attachment incorrectly marked as being from the National Police Commissioner and the “Ministry of the Interior” under the control of the “judicial police”. The attachment claims to be an official notification about the start of legal proceedings related to sexual offences and cybercrime. National Police Commissioner Halla Bergþóra Björnsdóttir is falsely named as the sender.

Police said the messages did not come from the National Police Commissioner or the police and urged people not to reply, click on links or open attachments included in such emails. They also warned recipients not to provide card details or sensitive personal information.

The police directed the public to information from CERT-IS about phishing scams.
