Dredging has begun in the entrance channel to Vestmannaeyjar harbour as part of a project to widen it and shorten the north harbour breakwater, mbl.is reported.

The dredging vessel Sebastiano Caboto is carrying out the work for Belgian company Jan De Nul, which was contracted by Vegagerðin. About 50,000 cubic metres of material are to be removed.

After dredging is complete, the harbour plans to seek prices for shortening the breakwater by up to 40 metres.

The vessel will also unload material outside Eiðið, where a new breakwater is planned. The harbour said this marks the start of construction on its port facilities project outside Eiðið.
