A groundwater discharge that once released six million litres of water a day is still leaking in Köyliö, Yle reports. The amount of water released from Köyliönjärvi has fallen sharply, however.

The unusual groundwater discharge began in March 2024 at the site of a former fish farm in Köyliö. Afry, a consulting and design company mapping the soil, had installed a pipe to measure the groundwater level too deep.

More than two years ago, groundwater gushed from the artificial spring at a rate of six million litres a day. The current flow is about 250,000 litres a day.

Afry is currently measuring the flow rate and water quality at the site and monitoring subsidence. Antti Pesonen, head of Afry’s water operations in Finland, said the amount of water released has declined steadily and is expected to continue falling.

Although the discharge is still continuing, Afry plans to bring it to an end and restore the area.
