Tuesday 6th August 2024 on 18:24 in Iceland Iceland

Search and rescue operations are underway in the Kerlingarfjöll mountains for two foreign tourists who went missing after requesting assistance last night. Over a hundred rescue workers have been involved in extensive search efforts, as the tourists reported being trapped inside a cave. However, there are limited clues to guide the search apart from the location from where their emergency call was made.

Earlier today, a rental car was discovered near the campsite in Kerlingarfjöll. This car is believed to potentially belong to the missing tourists, although this has not yet been confirmed. Following the discovery, search dogs have been summoned to aid in the efforts, intensifying the search mission.

Sveinn K. Rúnarsson, a police chief with the South Iceland Police, stated that there is currently no confirmation regarding the ownership of the rental vehicle. The car is parked at a lot next to the campsite, and attempts to contact the renter have not yet been successful.

As the search continues, a decision has been made to significantly increase the number of search personnel in the area. Rescue teams were called from various regions of the country, except for the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, the Westfjords, the Eastfjords, and the Westman Islands. The two missing tourists, who became stranded in the cave, have not been in contact with authorities since their initial plea for help.

Rescue and recovery operations are ongoing, with hopes that the efforts will soon lead to finding the tourists.
