Rain to spread across Norway as summer deluge arrives

Rain began moving across eastern and southern Norway on Wednesday and is expected to spread north over the coming days, Dagbladet reports. The heaviest rainfall is forecast for the Sogn and Fjordane area, with substantial amounts also expected in eastern Norway, meteorologist Johanne Ordahl of the Norwegian Meteorological Institute told NTB.

Rainfall will increase throughout the day. Southern Norway is expected to receive up to 40 millimetres within 24 hours, with possible torrential rain and lightning.

A forest fire warning issued for parts of eastern Norway and Agder because of dry weather in July is being phased out during Wednesday as the rain arrives.

Despite the wet conditions, temperatures will remain relatively high. Eastern and southern Norway could reach around 20 degrees on some days in the coming days, while western and central Norway will generally see temperatures of about 15 degrees, with occasional highs near 19 degrees.

Rain will reach Nordland and Lofoten on Thursday. Nordland is expected to have the best weather on Wednesday, while Troms and Finnmark could see a fine day on Thursday.

On Svalbard, the forecast is different. After a period of good weather and temperatures in the double digits, snow is expected during the weekend.

There may be less rainfall overall on Friday evening and Saturday, with showers in western Norway. Rain is then expected to reach southern Norway on Sunday afternoon. Northern Norway will be the driest region.

More rain is forecast across the country next week. “It is not only people in western and northern Norway who will get rain this time. Everyone will,” Ordahl said.
