August brings warm weather in east and torrential rain in north

August is beginning with warm, dry weather in parts of Norway and heavy rain elsewhere, Dagbladet reports. Eastern and southern Norway are expected to see sunshine and temperatures above 20 degrees in several places, while western and northern areas face wetter conditions.
July also brought sharp contrasts in rainfall. Lurøy in Nordland was the wettest location, with 350 millimetres of rain during the month. Skjåk in Innlandet recorded just six millimetres.
“In general, it was wetter in the west and north, and drier in the east and south,” meteorologists wrote, adding that terrain and local showers created large variations.
Eastern and southern Norway are expected to be the weather winners over the next few days, according to duty meteorologist Patrick Stoll. Temperatures will remain warm on Monday, although the risk of rain and thunderstorms will increase later in the week.
“There are good chances of quite a few days with 20 degrees or more in Eastern and Southern Norway in the near future,” Stoll told Dagbladet.
Western Norway will have a much wetter start to August, with westerly winds, rain and temperatures of around 15 degrees during the weekend. Monday is also expected to be wet, particularly along the coast.
Warmer and drier weather is forecast towards the middle of the week, with temperatures reaching around 18 degrees in some places. Stoll said there was hope for fine weather in Western Norway on Tuesday and Wednesday, although some cloud would remain.
Parts of Troms and Finnmark are under a yellow warning for torrential rain. Meteorologists expect a powerful front with heavy precipitation to move north from Troms, with local rainfall of up to 20 millimetres in one hour. Thunderstorms are also possible, and driving conditions could become difficult locally.
Once the front has passed, Northern Norway is expected to have several drier days. The region has had a lot of rain recently, Stoll said, so residents should make the most of the drier periods.
